Thought of the Day #3
Museums are vacuum-sealed monuments to the “best” of mankind. Like photographs of the past, they select out the “ugly,” the “messy,” the “bad,” and leave behind an incomplete and distorted timeline highlighting only what “deserves” to be seen.
Who decides what makes the cut? And what is the consequence of showcasing nothing but "beautiful" faces? Even the expansion of “mainstream” culture to include underserved minority voices doesn’t fully reflect the entirety of humanity: The “ugly” faces, the “messy” truths, the “bad” art that was created to be discarded but is infinitely more precious and worthy of preserving than the “art” they chose to keep.
