Our Mission
The ultimate goal of The Newsagent's is to aid in the rediscovery, restoration, and preservation of the culture that is being actively flattened or destroyed by digital algorithms.
These content streams that were ostensibly designed to make it easier to find more of what we love have turned on us, and are now actively preventing us from being exposed to culture that doesn't conform to our pre-determined and pre-sorted "preferences."
Imagine being permanently marked by a single moment of your life -- a single thought, a single mood, a single like. That is effectively what algorithms do. They hack off our edges and assign us a single-sided "identity" so they can perpetually force-feed us an infinite scroll of flattened, sanitized, pre-approved iterations of that one thing that supposedly defines us.
But eating the same thing every day will make you sick -- and that's exactly what the algorithm is doing: Overstuffing us with the same reheated slop day in and day out. Worse still: With no real opportunity to break free, to discover a new food, an unexpected food that could bring new flavors into our lives and open us up to new recipes for imagination and creativity.
Of course, the algorithm itself is also being reshaped by this process: As it determines that certain things are "popular" and "desirable," it moves to select out those things that are "worthless" because they take up space that could otherwise be occupied by something "good." Nevermind that a machine can't tell good from bad, because art is subjective and can't be reduced to a mathematical equation, no matter how complex the formula.
And what happens to the art that is deemed to be of no value by the algorithm? It is removed, no longer searchable, no longer findable, no longer stumble-upon-able. It is gone.
This is a terrifying development, and one that should be openly rebelled against.
The Newsagent's is the rebels' stronghold, and the battle to rediscover, restore, and preserve culture starts here.
